  • Accidentally, I just passed by a thread in a forum with a lot of New Wave hits.
Its like WOW, its really a lot. I only knew a few since New Wave reaches its peak in the 70s and 80s, and im not yet in this world that time.
I've learned to listen to this kind of genre because my mother was a big fan of it. And then later on, it became a genre that affects my musical taste and influence.

For those who are not familiar with the genre, New Wave is classified as a rock music. The most notable genres that influence the composition of New Wave are Punk Rock and Power Pop. Since musical genre is hard to differentiate to one another, let's make it simple. Punk Rock is a usual rock music with some emphasis on its lyrics.. mostly the concept is anti or more rebellious. Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Red Hot Chili Peppers fall to this category. Greenday, Sum41, Blink 182, Simple Plan, A Day To Remember, Boys Like Girls, Fall Out Boy and The Offspring also fall on the same genre but with a taste of pop music. Power pop genre uses drums, with an emphasis of using electronic guitars and synthesizers. Weezers, Fountains of Wayne, Ok Go and Click Five fall in this genre.

Power Pop + Punk Rock = New Wave

I myself got lists of New Wave songs. Just to share with you, here is my list.

    1. Stars - Simply Red
    2. Imitation of Life - REM
    3. Somebody - Depeche Mode
    4. The Ghost In You - Psychedelic Furs
    5. Karma Chameleon - Culture Club
    6. The Promise - When in Rome
    7. Light and Shade - Fra Lippo Lippi
    8. Friday Im in love - The Cure
    9. Bizarre Love Triangle - New Order
    10. Dont Dream Its Over - Crowded House
Thats my Top 10 actually, Stars is my favorite New Wave song.
You may know some of the songs from other artist different from those artists listed above.
The Australian Band "Frente" made a cover acoustic version of New Order's Bizarre Love Triangle while Sixpence None The Richer made their own version of Crowded House's Don't Dream Its Over.

U2 is also classified as a New Wave artist with their song "With or Without You". Adam Lambert's "Mad World" is originally sung by Tears for Fears. Other notable artist under this genre are A-Ha, Duran Duran, Pet Shop Boys and Human League.

The continuation of New Wave still exists in the songs and music of The Ting Tings (Yeah... THAT'S NOT MY NAME!) La Roux, Franz Ferdinand, Gwen Stefani and The Killers.
